For the past few weeks I have been studying Esther. This has always been one of my very favorite books of the Bible. Here are a couple of things that I have learned from the life of Esther….
Esther was a woman who didn’t have much control over her life. She was forced to join the many other young women that were brought before the king and placed in the harem to be chosen to be queen. She did eventually become the queen. Because she was in the royal palace, she was separated from her cousin Mordecai who had raised her since she had been orphaned as a child. She was a Jew, and because of her heritage Mordecai insisted that she hide that she was a Jew, because there were many people who hated the Jews at that time. She did not choose where she lived and she did not choose her husband the king whom she was married to. It may sound nice to be married to a king, but this king in all appearances was a womanizer and also a heavy drinker and partier. She couldn’t even go before the king without his permission.
